Nike with its recent launch of Nike Mag, Glow Pack and MagistaX line of products is targeting 50 billion dollar in revenue by 2020. That is in another 3 years and 2 months. Nike was getting 30 billion dollar in 2015. With Nike's ever growing innovative and trendy line of products it is a very achievable target. Nike is planning to do all this while cutting carbon emissions to zero and a goal of zero discharge of hazardous chemicals. While digital companies like Google and Microsoft aim to reduce carbon foot print and improve efficiency in their data centers for a company like Nike which has to deal with hard substances like plastic, leather, rexin and other materials focusing on carbon neutrality and zero hazardous chemicals is going to pose a whole bunch of challenges.
Nike maintains a list of restricted materials here which is analysed and several research activity takes place around this in order to avoid utilizing them in its factories or by material suppliers. Nike has a Waste Water Program where all the factories report their water use since 2001. The 811 factories that are monitored at present are 99% compliant with wastewater treatment and quality guideline. Nike enforces all suppliers to test for restricted materials. Nike in 2010 has introduced a Sustainable Chemistry Guidance section which it believes will help in rapidly expanding its Green Chemistry Program and vertically integrating with suppliers.
With sustainable innovation in products like FLYKNIT Nike has engineered materials that are gentle on the feet and recycle into a very little waste when discarded compared to other traditional products which result in millions of pounds of waste.

NIKE FLYKNIT IS AN ILLUSTRATION OF THE UNIQUE NATURE OF NIKE DESIGN. IT HELPS US IMAGINE PRODUCT THAT CAPTIVATES AT FIRST GLANCE. ITS BEAUTY DELIVERS A VISCERAL REACTION THAT GIVES DESIGNERS AND ATHLETES GOOSEBUMPS AND IT ALLOWS US TO CREATE USING LESS WASTE THAN EVER BEFORE. - John Hoke, VP Nike DesignOn average traditional cut and sew manufacturing process results in tons of waste when manufactured as Nike scale. With engineering techniques like the ones used in FLYKNIT where it is precision engineered down to every stitch resulting in 60% less waste. Recycling and Regenerating techniques like Nike Grind has made it possible to create products which can be recycled into premium material palette and can be completely transformed into different elements and reused any number of times to utilize in manufacturing of other products. Today 71% of Nike products contain such engineered molecules which can live on beyond the lifecycle of the product itself and find its way into other products with efficient treatment.
